TUCSON, Arizona - October 11 - Yudelson Associates, a leading green building consulting firm, released today a White Paper for the campus sustainability movement, “The GIST of Campus Sustainability - Gain Impact. Save Time.” Co-authored by principal Jerry Yudelson, PE, LEED AP and Senior Associate Tom Buckholtz, PhD, the white paper presents an effective method for organizing sustainability efforts at colleges and universities nationwide.
Yudelson is a founding Board Member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), the largest national umbrella organization for faculty, students, administrators, staff and facilities professionals. Started in January of 2006, AASHE has more than 160 university members, as of October 2006. The Association’s first annual conference, held in Tempe, AZ, last week, drew more than 650 registrants, including more than 200 students.
“The GIST Toolkit (PDF) is a great system for organizing your work to achieve high level results,” said Yudelson. “By focusing on outcomes rather than inputs (programs, budgets, staffing, etc.), the GIST method shifts the focus first to setting goals, building coalitions and other foundational activities, then to results. It is useful not only for campuses but for any company or public agency that has sustainability at the forefront of its mission.”
Yudelson Associates, Tucson, AZ, www.greenbuildconsult.com, was formed in 2006 to “grow the business of green building” and facilitating sustainability initiatives. The founder, Jerry Yudelson, is a leading national authority on green buildings and corporate sustainability, with three books on green marketing and more than three dozen articles to his credit in the past three years. He is the senior editor of the web site, www.igreenbuild.com, and on the editorial board of two major national trade and professional magazines. Buckholtz is a former senior official in the first Bush Administration who has spent the last 20 years leading change initiatives at large organizations, in business, industry and government.

Educated Incapacity?
My article, Educated Incapacity?, for the October 16th issue of IGreenBuild newsletter discusses whether architects, engineers and contractors really have the “right stuff” to bring about a revolution in energy efficiency of buildings, to achieve 50% improvements in current building energy use for new and remodeled buildings by 2010. My conclusion is that there is a mammoth education and training requirement, along with significant changes in how buildings are designed and delivered, to meet this important goal.

Campus Sustainability Movement Grows
October 4-6 in Tempe, Arizona, at Arizona State U., now the largest university in the country in terms of students, the campus sustainability movement took off. The first annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) drew more than 650 people, including more than 200 students. AASHE is less than a year old and already has more than 150 campuses as members. Check them out at AASHE. The big news is the Focus on the Future, a January 30, 2008, national event involving more than 1,000 campuses, with a daylong program dealing with global warming and the need for rapid movement to a “zero net growth” in carbon dioxide emissions. For this important meeting, Jerry Yudelson and associate Tom Buckholtz produced a White Paper, “Gain Impact. Save Time - The GIST of Campus Sustainability Planning” which introduces a new method for achieving results in sustainability for any campus or large organization.

The Green Home Market
West Coast Green drew more than 7,000 people, according to organizers, to San Francisco September 28-30, to find out about green technology for homes. This was an amazing turnout, even given it was in San Francisco. Great exhibitors, about 250 booths, with a great speakers’ lineup, including myself. For a copy of what I handed out to my session, “The Search for the Elusive Green Consumer,” email me: . The large and enthusiastic audience at this event indicates to me that the residential green building market is set to rocket in the next two years!
