The Proof Is In! Green Buildings Get Higher Rents, Have Greater Occupancy, Says Just-Released Study

A November 2007 study of more than 200 buildings by University of San Diego professor Norman Miller shows that Energy Star office buildings over 200,000 sq.ft. get about two percent greater occupancy and about $2 per sq.ft. greater rents, along with $0.54 per sq.ft. lower operating costs and 30%  higher resale value. Isn’t the debate just about over, whether green buildings are a benefit to developers?

Los Angeles closes in on mandating LEED buildings

The City of Los Angeles Planning Commission moved one step closer to mandating LEED buildings for the commercial sector by requiring all large buildings to reduce energy use by 15% and offering incentives to large commercial developments pursuing at least LEED Silver certification.

Wal-Mart solar power initiative showcases California store

Earlier this year, Wal-Mart selected three solar power providers to install solar electric systems on 22 stores in California and Hawaii. The first store is in Santa Ana, CA, and the expected output of all systems is 20 million kilowatt-hours per year, enough to power up to 30% of the California stores’ needs.

Al Gore Joins Big Money VC Firm Kleiner Perkins

The recent Nobel Peace Prize winner announced he has joined the prestigious Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a partner, to help direct the firm’s effort to finance technology solutions to global warming. Green building technologies are likely to be a beneficiary.

More than 20,000 people turned out for the USGBC’s annual Greenbuild conference and exhibition in Chicago last week. With Bill Clinton as the keynote and a host of exciting announcements, the show surpassed everyone’s expectations. Next year’s show in Boston promises to be even bigger!
