The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) on the University of British Columbia campus is LEED Platinum certified and designed to meet all Living Building Challenge requirements. Envisioned as a “living laboratory,” the CIRS building goes beyond green and actually improves the surrounding environment through onsite energy production and water purification.

Historic Portland Warehouse Restored for LEED Platinum Offices

Rather than build a new structure, Mercy Corps, a global nonprofit aid group, decided to renovate an 1892 grocery warehouse. The team restored 75 percent of the original building and added an addition that nearly doubled the gross square footage.

The new headquarters building for the global corporation ThyssenKrupp received the highest green building certification from DNGB, the German Sustainable Building Council. A custom façade, geothermal heating system, and waste-heat recovery contribute to a 30 percent energy use reduction compared to a standard German building.
