Campus Sustainability Rocks!
Friday, October 19, 2007The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), of which I’m proud to be a founding board member, now has 320 campus members. More than 400 campus presidents have signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Green buildings will be a key part of meeting the climate commitment on all campuses, so design and construction firms should be pushing LEED Silver and Gold certification for every project.

Growth rates in energy-efficient lighting lead green building technologies
Wednesday, August 08, 2007The Freedonia Group’s market research into advanced lighting products shows growth rates of 14 percent annually through 2011, doubling 2006 levels to reach $4.4 billion in sales. Lighting energy conservation is a key green building technology because lower lighting power use also reduces HVAC use, both of which contribute to global carbon dioxide generation.

LEED Registrations top 6300, green building trend accelerates!
Friday, June 08, 2007According to the US Green Building Council’s latest figures, LEED registrations for new construction topped 800 for the first four months of this year, ensuring another acceleration in the green building trend, with the likelihood of the bellwether rating system, LEED for New Construction, topping 2,000 new project registrations this year, which would represent another 50% increase in cumulative LEED-NC project registrations.

California CEQA-el Promises more Green Buildings, says Consultant
Wednesday, May 23, 2007Newly elected California Attorney General Jerry Brown (yes, the former Governor) is pushing to have large development project environmental impact reports require a “carbon mitigation” plan, before they are certified as complete under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This should dramatically accelerate consideration of energy efficiency and other carbon mitigation strategies in new developments.
