2008 has been the busiest year yet for Yudelson Associates, and we want to thank all of our clients, friends and associates for helping to make it so. We wish each of you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year. We look forward to “growing the business of green building” with all of you in 2009.
Yudelson Associates Awarded Two New Research Contracts
The National Association of Electrical Distributors Education and Research Foundation has awarded Yudelson Associates two new research contracts. The first project, Selling Energy Management Solutions: Lessons from the Field, will provide guidance to electrical distributors on marketing and selling lighting, lighting controls, building controls and solar power systems. The second project, Corporate Sustainability: A Game Plan for Electrical Manufacturers and Distributors, will provide practical guidance to large and small manufacturers and large and small distributors on how to organize and implement cost-effective sustainability initiatives. Research Director Jaimie Galayda, PhD, LEED® AP, will manage both projects. Yudelson Associates appreciates the confidence shown in our research capabilities by the NAED's Channel Advantage Partnership, in awarding us this work. We expect to complete both projects by the middle of 2009.
Germany's First Green-Certified Shopping Center
As the guest of Alex Funke, country CEO for Holland's Multi Development, I toured the first green-certified shopping center in Duisburg, Germany, a moderate income city of 500,000 north of Cologne (Köln) at the western edge of the Ruhr industrial district. Forum Duisburg contains a green roof and a 90-percent efficient combined heating and power (CHP) system. Certified at the "Very Good" level by the UK's BREEAM system, Forum Duisburg is also notable for its social programs, including an extensive kindergarten and child care system, free wheelchairs with attendants for disabled and elderly shoppers and full integration with the surrounding neighborhood and public transit system.
Report: How Leading Retail Developers Practice Corporate Sustainability
As part of his role as Research Scholar for Real Estate Sustainability at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), Jerry's latest Research Review report was just published by ICSC. He profiles sustainability programs at two European and one American developer of shopping centers. The report offers prescriptions for how other developers can incorporate sustainability into their business strategies and profit from them.
Greenbuild 2008 a Fantastic Success; Greenbuild 2009 Call for Papers
The U.S. Green Building Council's 2008 Greenbuild show last month was a fantastic success, attracting more than 28,000 people to the Boston Convention Center. Watch the main proceedings at the USGBC's conference website, Greenbuild365. Greenbuild 2009, November 11-13 in Phoenix, promises to be even more exciting with nearly 2000 exhibit booths and more than 1000 exhibitors. Plan to be there! Once again, for the sixth year, Jerry will be chairing the Steering Committee for the show, so this is a personal invitation to attend. The Call for Papers is out with a January 16, 2009 deadline for presentation proposals. The competition for presentation slots is tough, so don't delay in getting your ideas together and submitting them.
Jerry's 2009 Speaking Topics
November and December have taken Jerry to speak to such diverse audiences as the National Association of Electrical Distributors in Chicago and Marco Island, Florida, and the Urban Land Institute of Germany in Frankfurt. January will see him in Philadelphia for WHYY public television and in Tampa for manufacturer Modernfold. He'll also conduct a video keynote for the Nova Scotia Homebuilders Association.
For 2009, Jerry has developed several major themes for his presentations: Zero Net Energy Buildings; European Green Building Trends; The Business Case for Green Buildings and Green Development; the Green Homes Marke; and Corporate Sustainability and Green Buildings.

Firm Profile: Hopkins Architects Ltd., London
Earlier this year, Jerry had the privilege of interviewing Michael Taylor, Director of Hopkins Architects, at the firm's London office, for Jerry's forthcoming book on European green building design. Recently, he met again with Michael along with Bill Taylor, also a Hopkins Director (but no relation), at the Greenbuild show in London. In 2006, Hopkins Architects completed the LEED Platinum Applied Research and Development building at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff (with associated architect Burns Wald-Hopkins Shambach Architects of Tucson). Their science building project at Yale University, Kroon Hall, is also aiming at a LEED Platinum certification. About 30 years old, the firm was recently named Sustainable Architect of the Year for 2008 in the U.K. by Building magazine. In the U.K., one of the firm's more noteworthy projects is the Portcullis House, an office building for 210 Members of the U.K. Parliament. Cited in the Building magazine award, the 75,000-sq.ft. Luton Innovation Centre, rated BREEAM 'excellent', uses 100% natural ventilation, solar hot water and automatic vents for night-time cooling.
Project Profile: Northern Arizona University, ARD Building, LEED Platinum
Located at an elevation of 7,000-feet, the Applied Research & Development (ARD) Facility is a $25 million, 60,000-square-foot building that took four years to design and build. The building's passive ventilation, radiant heating and cooling, heat-recovery ventilation, high-performance glazing and solar shading were designed to reduce energy use by 60 percent compared with a similar conventional building. A photovoltaic system is expected to produce 20 percent of the building's electricity, and a solar thermal system will supply hot water. Waterless urinals and low-flush toilets using reclaimed water contribute to a 60 percent reduction in water use. Seventy-six percent (by cost) of the wood used in the building was certified to Forest Stewardship Council standards.
