New Study Has Important Lessons for Green Contractors

MCAANew European Mechanical Technologies and Yudelson Associates completed a study in September for the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) which profiled a number of European approaches to green buildings that can be used in the U.S. The study can be downloaded from MCAA’s green contractors web site.

Also, watch for another new report later this month profiling the electrical energy efficiency market. Yudelson Associates recently completed this survey of the market for the National Association of Electrical Distributors. This is the first comprehensive survey of this market from the viewpoint of electrical distribution and will be used by manufacturers and wholesalers to help set marketing and product development strategies.

Green Building Books Reveal Secrets

Green Building through Integrated DesignThe secrets of successful integrated design are revealed in Jerry’s latest green building book, Green Building through Integrated Design. This is the first comprehensive survey of LEED Platinum projects in the U.S. and Canada, and it reveals how these projects used integrated design processes and methods to achieve high-performance goals, often with no more than a conventional building budget.

We are also pleased to report that Jerry Yudelson’s books continue to garner honors. For example, Jerry’s how-to book for buying a new green home, Choosing Green: the Homebuyer’s Guide to Good Green Homes, was a finalist in the USA Book News in the 2008 National Best Books Awards; and Jerry’s book, The Green Building Revolution, was chosen among the first offerings of the U.S. Green Building Council’s “GreenWorks Book Club.”

More Green Building Books on the Way

Jerry’s new book, Green Building Trends: Europe, is well into production and should be released by Island Press in the spring of 2009. This is the first comprehensive look at successful approaches to green building in Europe and how they can be used in the U.S.

Also, watch for Jerry’s other new book, Sustainable Retail Development, written for the International Council of Shopping Centers. This book is in the research and writing stage and expects to be released in late spring or early summer of 2009. We’re still looking for good case studies for the book, so please send your ideas to jerry@greenbuildconsult.com. Also, check out the ICSC’s new sustainability portal for tips on greening the retail sector.

LEED for Existing Buildings

Perhaps the fastest growing aspect of the green building movement is the LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) program, with more than 1,250 new projects registering for certification in the first 10 months of 2009, representing more than 500 million square feet of projects. Jerry Yudelson is one of the few national LEED-EB faculty members and our Research Director, Dr. Jaimie Galayda, recently passed the LEED Accredited Professional Exam (LEED AP) in the LEED-EB system. We’re eager to work with clients who are pursuing LEED-EB certification. If you are interested, please contact jaimie@greenbuildconsult.com to discuss your situation.

Project Profile: Doxford Solar Office

Doxford Solar OfficeEarlier this year, Jerry had the privilege of interviewing David Lloyd Jones of Studio E Architecture for an upcoming book on European green building trends. Lloyd Jones is a pioneering environmental architect in the U.K., with a classic book, Architecture and the Environment: Bioclimatic Building Design, written ten years ago. Here we profile Studio E’s important green building project, the Doxford Solar Office, that uses building integrated photovoltaics as both an architectural statement and a significant energy contributor.

The Doxford Solar Office is located at a business park near Sunderland, in the UK. It was the first speculatively constructed office building to incorporate building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and the resulting solar façade was the largest constructed in Europe at that time. This low-energy office building, with the entire south-facing façade composed of building-integrated photovoltaics, generates 73-kW (peak) of power, a design innovation rarely seen in the U.S. or Canada. The south façade is a completely integral system built in conjunction a major German manufacturer, Schüco.
